The asset register and the life of an asset

The register keeps one record per fixed asset: what it cost, how much of that cost has been depreciated and what it is worth in the books today. This chapter explains the figures, the statuses and how to find an asset.

Registering an asset does not create a journal entry. Neither does placing it in service. The purchase reaches the ledger through the supplier bill or a journal entry of your own, using the cost account of the asset's category. The register and the ledger are tied by the entries of depreciation and disposal.
