RFM segments

Segmentos RFM

RFM sorts customers by three things: how recently they bought, how often and how much. From those three the system gives each customer a segment with a name you can act on.

The three figures

Las tres cifras

FigureHow it is calculated
Recency (R)Whole days since the customer's last purchase.
Frequency (F)On how many different days the customer bought in the last 365 days. Two orders on the same day count once.
Monetary (M)The sum of what the customer bought in the last 365 days. Returns are not subtracted from this figure.

From figures to scores

De las cifras a los puntajes

Each figure becomes a score from 1 to 5 by comparing the customer with the rest of your customers. The system takes all the active customers with at least one purchase in the last twelve months, orders them by that figure and cuts the list in five equal parts. The fifth that bought most recently gets R 5 and the fifth that has gone longest without buying gets R 1; the fifth that buys most often gets F 5; the fifth that spends most gets M 5.

ℹ️
With fewer than five customers with purchases there is nothing to compare against. In that case every customer who bought gets the middle score in the three figures and falls in Needs Attention. The segments become meaningful as the customer base grows.

💡
A segment is a position relative to your other customers, not an absolute mark. If all your customers buy every week, the one who buys every month can still land in a low segment.

Common issues

Problemas habituales

"Not enough data for an RFM distribution yet."
The nightly calculation has not run for your company yet, or there are no active customers. Look again tomorrow.
Almost everyone is in Needs Attention
You have fewer than five customers with purchases in the last twelve months, so nobody can be compared. See the note above.
Almost everyone is in Insufficient Data
Most of your accounts have no purchase with a customer assigned in the last 365 days. Check that sales are being recorded with the customer.
A customer changed segment without buying anything
It is expected: time passing lowers their recency, and the purchases of the other customers move the cut points.
Volvé a mirar mañana.
